R-22 VS R-410A: What Is The Difference?

R-22 and R-410A are types of refrigerants used in air conditioning systems. While R-22 is no longer used in modern AC systems, R-410A is, so what are the differences between these two refrigerants, and which one is better? Our team of plumbing professionals in New Jersey explain. 


HCFC stands for hydrochlorofluorocarbon, and HFC stands for hydrofluorocarbon. The important difference between the two is that HCFC contains chlorine and can cause harm to the ozone layer, while HFC is chlorine-free and poses no danger to the ozone layer. 

Capability Differences

R-22 doesn’t absorb or release heat as well as R-410A, making the latter more energy efficient. R-410A is also more effective at heating or cooling your house because it has more fluid temperature changing abilities. R-22, on the other hand, is more likely to cause a compressor burnout because it doesn’t let go of heat as easily as R-401A.

Ozone Exhaustion

R-22 is a HCFC, meaning it contains chlorine and causes harm to the ozone layer when it leaks. The HVAC industry has been phasing out R-22 to minimize damage to the ozone layer, and as of 2010, R-22 was outright banned for use in new builds. 

Which One is Better? 

R-410A is more environmentally friendly and more efficient. Most newer HVAC units are designed to use R-410A, and if you still have a HVAC system that uses R-22, it might be time to consider an upgrade. R-22 is becoming more and more difficult to find, so your technician may struggle to find it.
